Run through these five pillars, answering each question honestly as you navigate your application as if you were a first-time user.
1. Visual Hierarchy & Scanability
Can the user understand what a page is about in under 3 seconds? Check if your headings (h1, h2) are distinctly larger and heavier than body text. Ensure your primary call-to-action buttons have high-contrast background colors that stand out immediately from other elements on the screen.
2. Navigation & Orientation
Does the user always know where they are and how to go back? Ensure your active navigation item is visually highlighted in the sidebar or top bar. Implement clear breadcrumb paths on all inner pages, and ensure the back buttons behave predictably without losing user input or state.
3. Form Design & Input Fields
Forms are where transactions happen—and where most users abandon. Are your input fields clearly labeled above the input box (not just using placeholder text)? Check if you have real-time validation that displays helpful, inline error messages, rather than waiting for the user to hit submit and refreshing the page.
4. Interaction Consistency
Consistency builds confidence. Do similar elements behave in the same way? Check if your links are styled uniformly (e.g., standard color and underline). Ensure buttons that perform the same action use identical copy and icons across different screens of the platform.
5. Accessibility & Text Legibility
Is your product usable for everyone? Ensure your body copy uses a readable font size (at least 16px) with an line-height of 1.5. Check that all primary text passes the WCAG AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against the background, and that images have descriptive alt text tags.
